Well, arms, you’ll throw real-life hooks, jabs, and uppercuts (at the TV, not your friend, of course) as you try to outmaneuver and outsmart your opponent. If you wanted to find out what games were coming out in the next few months, you turned to a magazine. Video game magazines used to be the de facto way to find out what was happening in the gaming world.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Review
The DNF Duel official YouTube account recently posted a short Q&A session with game director Kodani Ryosuke about upcoming updates and support for the title. We’ve gotten teases in the past that Street Fighter 6 would feature alternate costumes out of the box for the roster, but now we know exactly what they are. The “Outfit 2 Trailer” shows off each character’s alternate costume, which draws from a classic look for the returning cast or a casual getup for the newcomers. And Street Fighter 6 absolutely continues this legacy with further iteration on what was already a unique visual flourish to set the franchise apart.
The definitive weapons-based fighter, the Soul Calibur series struggled to find its footing for a while but seems to have come home with SC6, which echoes the beloved Soul Calibur 2. It’s not going to be for everyone, and the incremental updates between versions are not going to be to everyone’s taste, but if this is your thing, EA Sports UFC 5 is the latest and greatest version of it. We also recommend this one for players who love checking out the best sports games around. Give the best publications a thumbs up and share some of your favorite games in the comments section. This addition adds a new layer of depth to the gameplay, which is especially evident in the game’s frenetic online multiplayer modes. Though the Invasions mode still feels rough around the edges and the game’s microtransactions feel a bit excessive, Mortal Kombat 1 is a solid continuation of the Mortal Kombat franchise. God of Rock is a game that takes considerable time and effort to become good at, though its presentation and unique gameplay mechanics make it a memorably creative effort. Like many fighting games, God of Rock is best enjoyed as a multiplayer experience rather than playing against the A.I. With a little more polish, God of Rock could turn into something truly special, combining fighting game sensibilities with a Guitar Hero-like presentation.
Lots of fighting games on this list require patience and a high level of skill to be played at a master level. They require hours of study if you want to become competitive and are taken very seriously. The second of new additions to the Granblue Fantasy Versus roster as part of the upcoming sequel finally has a proper trailer. Siegfried’s new trailer shows off a fair bit of the new mechanics in action, including the Raging Strike and Chain system for flashy guard crush attacks. Check out this video finalround.org released shortly after its debut at the 2023 Summer Game Fest for Mortal Kombat 1’s gameplay. In the trailer we get to see the Kameo assist fighters system in action, lots of fatalities teased, and a whole lot of konfirmed fighters.
Since being launched in 1974, Play Meter has grown to become one of the best-selling gaming publications in the United States. It’s reviews of video game systems and arcade games are popular among many readers. Pocket Bravery contains both the expected multiplayer and arcade modes but also a story mode in the style of Fatal Fury as its characters explore the city’s criminal underworld and fighting rings. Pocket Bravery evokes a classic era while avoiding feeling dated to modern sensibilities as it refines what made those foundational games so great in the first place.
Mortal Kombat 1 is finally here with its new era, and that comes with a new set of reimagined versions of classic characters in addition to a robust Kameo system on top of the usual combos and fatalities. The former is credited with helping revolutionize and lay the foundations for the genre, while the latter is one of the tightest, most beautiful sprite-based 2D fighters you’ll ever enjoy. And with Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, you don’t need to choose. There is also a new Street Fighter movie coming out soon, so now is the best time to revisit this classic. Each fight is a 3v3 affair, with one character on screen at a time until players call in their partners for an assist or screen-filling super move. And if you start to fall behind, the X-Factor mechanic can help you turn what looks to be sure defeat around.
While reading it, I really got a feeling of having found a lost 90s magazine. Apparently posting was down, due to a bug introduced into one of our plugins. Seems this hasn’t been fixed yet so the plugin (PWA) has been disabled.
Of all the fighting game battle royale clones to emerge from the Super Smash Bros franchise, 2021’s Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was one of the most enjoyable. The game received a full sequel this year in the aptly titled Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 for modern consoles and PC. With a robust playable roster, a myriad of stages, and an impressive number of game modes, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is an all-around improvement from its predecessor. Featuring the return of a hefty adventure mode in the form of the RPG-leaning World of Light, Ultimate is pure joy. Whether you’re a casual player or a pro, there really is something for everyone. In fact, Ultimate not only lays claim to being one of the greatest fighting games of the HD era, but arguably even one of the best games of all time.
With a rollback netcode and a good roster, King of Fighters 15 makes a strong impression that generally puts it above many others. Even when you go back to replay this game, you’ll be surprised how slick and fun it is. Again, this is an entry that is generally underrated and needs to be on your radar if you haven’t played it yet. The King of Fighters XIII will receive a new version dedicated to adding rollback netcode into the game, dubbed The King of Fighters XIII Global Match as we learned at Evo Japan. The open beta test for this version goes live today at 7 PM Pacific / 9 PM Eastern, available to anyone with a PS4/5. The test will end on Sunday June 11th at the same hour as the start time.
